Trump administration’s new national security strategy released
The Trump administration released its new National Security Strategy (NSS) on December 4-5, 2025, as a 33-page document emphasizing an “America First” approach to reconcile U.S. global dominance with selective retreats from prior international roles.
The strategy divides focus into five regions, prioritizing the Western Hemisphere via a “Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.” It calls for readjusting military presence to curb migration, drug flows, and cartels—potentially using lethal force—while countering external influences like China without naming it directly.
In Asia, it stresses economic rebalancing against China by urging allies (Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia) to adopt trade policies shifting China’s excess capacity, alongside military deterrence for Taiwan to preserve U.S. overmatch and oppose unilateral status quo changes.
Middle East engagement decreases, leveraging U.S. energy exports and recent actions against Iran; Europe faces criticism for weakness, with calls to “cultivate resistance” and boost defense spending. The plan seeks a lethal, technologically advanced military to deter and win wars decisively.
