China’s top general under investigation for alleged violations amid corruption crackdown
China’s Defense Ministry recently announced an investigation into General Zhang Youxia, the country’s top-ranking general and a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, for serious violations of party discipline and laws. This development is part of President Xi Jinping’s ongoing anti-corruption crackdown in the military, which has targeted numerous high-level officials.
General Zhang Youxia, long viewed as Xi’s closest military ally, faces allegations including possible corruption, leaking nuclear secrets to the US, and accepting bribes tied to appointments. Another senior officer, General Liu Zhenli, chief of the Joint Staff Department, is also under scrutiny for similar breaches.
The probe follows the expulsion of at least nine senior generals in late 2025 and purges of former defense ministers, marking one of the largest military shake-ups in decades. Analysts see it as a political purge to ensure loyalty, potentially disrupting military readiness and procurement.
These actions undermine Xi’s inner circle and raise questions about China’s military preparedness, including amid tensions over Taiwan. Official statements describe the violations as threats to the Communist Party’s absolute control over the armed forces.
