Bay of Bengal low-pressure system may become Cyclone Senyar

A low-pressure system over the Strait of Malacca and the adjoining south Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to become a depression around November 24, 2025, over the southeast Bay of Bengal and then strengthen into a cyclonic storm named Cyclone Senyar within approximately 48 hours after its formation as a depression. The cyclone name “Senyar,” meaning “lion,” was submitted by the United Arab Emirates. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts and special messages regarding this development and is closely monitoring the system as it progresses west-northwestward over the Bay of Bengal.

The expected formation and intensification timeline are:

  • Formation of depression over southeast Bay of Bengal on or around November 24, 2025.

  • Strengthening into Cyclone Senyar within the next 48 hours (around November 26, 2025).

  • The system is moving west-northwestward and is supported by atmospheric and sea conditions favorable for cyclogenesis.

Precautions such as advisories against venturing into the Andaman Sea and the southwest Bay of Bengal have been issued due to rough sea conditions and strong winds. However, no major impact is forecasted for Odisha until the end of November. Southern states may experience heavy rainfall and flooding risks as Cyclone Senyar intensifies.
