Cancelling train tickets? Indian Railways has just changed the cancellation charges

Indian Railways has revised its train ticket cancellation charges with a new tiered refund system based on timing before departure, effective in phases from April 1 to April 15, 2026. This update aims to curb misuse like bulk bookings by touts while offering boarding point flexibility up to 30 minutes before departure.

The new rules replace the prior flat fees (beyond 48 hours) and percentage slabs (48-12 hours at 25%, 12-4 hours at 50%) with stricter time-based deductions. No refunds apply under 8 hours or post-departure, tightening last-minute policies.

Cancellation Charges Table

Time Before Departure Deduction Policy Details
More than 72 hours Maximum Refund Flat fee per passenger only
72-24 hours 25% Fare Deduction Subject to minimum charge
24-8 hours 50% Fare Deduction Subject to minimum charge
Less than 8 hours No Refund Full forfeiture
Post-departure No Refund Full forfeiture

Flat fees remain class-based (e.g., ₹240 + GST for AC First/Executive, ₹120 + GST for Sleeper), applied as minimums where relevant. These apply per passenger on confirmed e-tickets via IRCTC.
