Ferry carrying over 350 people sinks in Philippines, killing at least 15

A ferry carrying over 350 people sank off Basilan province in the southern Philippines early on January 26, 2026, resulting in at least 15 deaths. Rescue operations saved around 316 passengers and crew, with about 28 still missing as searches continue.

The MV Trisha Kerstin 3, a roll-on/roll-off ferry owned by Aleson Shipping Lines, departed Zamboanga City around 9:20 PM on January 25 bound for Jolo in Sulu province. It carried 332 passengers and 27 crew—within its capacity of 352—when it issued a distress call at 1:50 AM local time, about 1-5 km from Baluk-Baluk Island. Strong waves reportedly flooded the lower deck after vehicle harnesses snapped, causing the vessel to list and capsize on its starboard side.

The Philippine Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and local fishing boats responded swiftly, rescuing hundreds and recovering bodies. Survivors were taken to ports in Basilan and Isabela City for medical care, though responders faced challenges from the influx of patients. Operations, aided by aircraft and helicopters, remain ongoing amid favorable weather.

As of January 26 morning, the death toll stands at 15-18 with 24-28 missing, per varying reports; no gale warning was active. An investigation into the cause is underway, as the vessel had been cleared for departure.
