Hafta Vasuli: Trump Wants Nations to Pay $1 Billion to Stay on Peace Board
President Donald Trump has proposed a “Board of Peace” where nations must pay at least $1 billion for permanent membership, according to a draft charter reported in early 2026. The board aims to promote stability and peace in conflict zones like Gaza. Funds would support reconstruction efforts there.
Trump would serve as the inaugural chairman, deciding invitations and holding final approval on decisions despite majority voting. Members get three-year terms, renewable at his discretion, with annual meetings or more as he calls them. He also controls the agenda, seal, and can remove members unless blocked by a two-thirds vote.
Canada’s finance minister stated the country will not pay the $1 billion fee. Palestinian group Islamic Jihad criticized it as serving Israel’s interests. Several nations oppose the proposal and are pushing back, finding Trump’s control over funds unacceptable. Leaders like Tony Blair and Mark Carney received invitations.
