Greenland’s defence is ‘common concern’ for Nato, Danish PM says as European troops fly in

Denmark is bolstering its military presence in Greenland alongside NATO allies amid heightened Arctic security tensions. The Danish Prime Minister has emphasized that Greenland’s defense represents a shared concern for the entire NATO alliance. European troops from countries like Germany have begun deploying as part of joint exercises.

Denmark announced an expansion of forces in and around Greenland starting January 13, 2026, involving aircraft, ships, soldiers, and allied contributions to train under Arctic conditions. This responds to geopolitical pressures, including rhetoric from the Trump administration about acquiring the territory. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte highlighted alliance unity on Arctic security during recent forums.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any US military action against Greenland, a Danish territory, could end NATO, while affirming security under the 1951 US-Denmark defense agreement. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen noted ongoing differences with the US after talks yielded no resolution. Greenland’s government supports strengthened NATO cooperation to protect critical infrastructure.

Allied nations are increasing their footprint, with Germany sending personnel and proposals for an “Arctic Sentry” operation modeled on existing NATO missions. The White House has downplayed the deployments, but EU leaders back Denmark’s stance against territorial takeover. These moves aim to deter threats and ensure transatlantic stability without fracturing the alliance.
