European troops deployed in Greenland after talks expose rift with Trump administration

European nations including France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden have deployed small contingents of troops to Greenland to bolster security amid stalled talks with the Trump administration. This move follows recent discussions in Washington between Danish and Greenlandic officials and US leaders like Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which exposed deep disagreements over US interest in acquiring the Arctic island. The deployments, framed as reconnaissance and exercises, signal Europe’s intent to assert NATO presence without directly confronting the US.

France sent 15 mountain infantry soldiers to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, with more expected soon. Germany dispatched a 13-person reconnaissance team, while Sweden and Norway contributed personnel for joint operations like Operation Arctic Endurance. Denmark leads by expanding its own military footprint with aircraft, ships, and troops, inviting NATO allies to participate.

Talks highlighted Trump’s persistent desire to control Greenland for its mineral resources and strategic Arctic position against Russia and China. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described a “fundamental disagreement,” rejecting any US takeover while agreeing to form a working group on security concerns. European officials emphasize routine NATO training, not deterrence, though locals view it as protection.

The US maintains about 150 troops at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, underscoring its existing foothold. Canada and France plan new consulates in Nuuk, amplifying international focus on the region. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen cited an unpredictable security environment as justification for heightened presence.
